Be Excellent To Each Other Press (BETEO Press) is a small artist-run publishing project initiated by Kysa Johnson.
Artists often want their work to participate in the world beyond the walls of exhibitions and to contribute, support, and remain connected to shared concerns. BETEO Press was created as a practical way to do that. It offers a public form for artists to reflect on elements of their work and how they can resonate out in the world creating a bridge from the work to the community. BETEO Press publishes artists whose work provides different portals to understanding our complex and interconnected world.
Each release is conceived as a thematic chapter in an ongoing investigation into how our work as artists reflects the world and in turn puts a part of itself into action within it. Editions are produced in small numbers and released periodically. The first releases present Johnson’s own work, establishing the framework of the project; future releases will invite artists whose practices explore connection, knowledge, and shared existence each in their own way.
A portion of every edition is redirected to organizations supporting causes that resonate with the theme of each release and chosen by each artist as a grounded counterpart to the themes explored in their work and life. The giving back is integral to the structure of the press itselfm creating a small circulation system in which artworks move outward and some of that movement continues beyond the studio.
BETEO Press functions as an evolving archive: a record of the world through art and action. Collectors are not only acquiring individual works but participating in a network of world building.
